What happens at the first session?
At the first session, you will be able to share in detail what is bringing you to therapy. I will also ask you what goals you’d like to achieve, as well as various questions to help me understand how to help you feel better. Since I see therapy as a collaborative process, the initial 1-3 sessions will help us both get a sense if we will work well together. If for some reason it is determined that we are not a good fit, I have working relationships with several local psychotherapists and counselors with whom I can connect you.
Is what we discuss confidential?
Everything discussed in session is confidential; no information will be disclosed without your written consent. There are some exceptions required by law to this rule, which are explicitly stated in privacy and policy.
Do you accept insurance?
I am in-network with various insurance companies. If I am not an in-network provider for your insurance, but you have out-of-network benefits, you will likely be reimbursed for a portion of the session fee by your insurance company (please verify that you have out of network benefits!). If you are using out of network benefits, the full session fee is to be paid at the time of service.
In using your out of network benefits, as a courtesy to you, I bill directly to the insurance company -- helping you to avoid any extra time consuming paperwork, such as submitting superbills to your insurance company for reimbursement, etc.
Please do not hesitate to contact me to determine if I am an in-network provider, or with any other insurance questions you may have.
What is your fee if I am not using insurance?
My out of pocket fee is $90 per 45-minute session. I accept payment by cash, check, and credit card. I offer a reduced fee for students. Please contact me to discuss fees.
How do I schedule appointments?
After we have spoken and I have set you up in the client portal, please utilize the scheduling feature in the client portal for cancelling, rescheduling, and scheduling future appointments. As I am often in session with clients, I am unable to attend to each client’s scheduling needs personally and immediately. In using the portal, you are able to immediately schedule yourself, 24/7 for a time that works best for you!
If you have difficulty using the scheduling feature of the client portal, please send me a secure message via the client portal, and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Do you have a cancellation policy?
All cancellations require 24 hours' notice, or you will be billed a cancellation fee of $50 (this fee is your responsibility -- your insurance company does NOT cover this fee). This fee must be paid within 30 days of the invoice issue date. The only time this fee is waived is in the event of an illness or emergency.
Can I contact you outside of session?
If you need to reach me outside of session, please send me a secure message through the client portal, or send me an email. I am often not immediately available, but will attempt to get back to you within 24 hours. I will generally respond briefly, and will discuss any in depth issues during session.
What if there is bad weather when I have an appointment?
I follow cancellations in accordance to the Smithtown Central School District, and will notify you if our appointment is cancelled.
If our appointment is not cancelled, but you do not feel safe driving, please send me an email. There will be NO cancellation fee billed during bad weather, as your safety is my priority!
What if I need medication?
I have working relationships with several psychiatrists who I can connect you with if we feel that an evaluation makes sense. It can be helpful to coordinate treatment with another practitioner to provide you with the specific help that you need.
What if I have an emergency?
In the event of an emergency, please dial 911, or go to your nearest emergency room.
